Balos, Chania
Balos Beach
The famous and beautiful lagoon of Balos is located approximately 17 km northwest of Kissamos and 56 km northwest of Chania. It is a shallow sandy beach that forms between the Gramvousa Peninsula and the smaller Akrotiri Tigani. Balos is definitely the most photographed beach of Crete, a favorite subject of all Greek tourist guides. It is famous for its turquoise waters, wild natural beauty and wonderful exotic scenery. Balos lagoon has white sand and exotic white, deep blue-green and turquoise waters. The sea is very shallow and warm, an ideal destination for small children. In many places the sand has a wonderful pink color, which comes from crushed seashells. Beyond the rocks the waters are deeper and colder, ideal for a mask. Like the surrounding area, they are included in the Natura protection program, with rare species of flora and fauna.
