General Terms & Conditions

BOOKING  POLICY: All bookings are made according to the vehicle category and not to a specific model. In case of non-availability of a vehicle in the category pre-selected by the customer, regarding always to a confirmed booking, Intercars reserves the right to provide the customer with a larger class car, at no charge to the customer.

AGE REQUIREMENT:  Drivers must be over 21 years of age, possessing a legal and valid driver's license, held for at least three years. An international driving license is required by the Greek Law for all renters that are not citizens of the European Community.

Fully comprehensive insurance (FDW): The renter’s responsibility for any damage to the vehicle is minimized to zero euros. Customers are fully covered for any damage to the vehicle and underside of the car as long as they remain upon the tarmac and from the right side of the road under the conditions of the highway traffic code. Collision Damage Waiver without an excess and third part insurance are included as well. Carelessness or bad driving (missing stop signs or red traffic lights, ignoring the highway code, driving off road or under the influence of drugs/alcohol etc) are not covered by any insurance policy. 

Collision damage waiver (CDW): A collision damage waiver (CDW) is an agreement with our company in which the renter is released from liability for collision damage to the vehicle in exchange for a 500-euro fee, subject to the terms of the rental agreement that exists. It is not insurance but a contractual obligation subject to many restrictions.

Affordable expectations regarding the insurance coverage that the customers are obligated to be aware of: 

  • Full Insurance is included by default in all rates. However, if you wish to avoid this insurance, note please that Intercars car rental corporation will not deal with foreign policies or credit card companies in the event of damages to the hired vehicle. Renters will have to pay for the damages they cause on the time of the return of the vehicle and Intercars car rental Crete corporation will issue them copies of all paperwork so they may make the claim themselves.
  • Car engine damage or destruction is not covered by the insurance in case of bad or careless driving. The customer is forbidden to open the hood of the car and fill the engine with the wrong type of oil. Our mechanic specializes in controlling and checking the car engine before the car is collected by the customer. We are responsible for it.
  • Insurance policy does not cover any situation of accident that is occurred by the driver under the influence of alcohol/drugs/illegal substances etc. 
  • Insurance will be avoided if the customer drives against the law or does not call us immediately from the point of accident.
  • Cabrio car roof tops are not covered by the insurance for any reason.
  • Insurance will be avoided if the driver does not follow the highway traffic code for any reason. (Stop sign, red traffic light, driving from the left side of the road etc.)
  • Traffic Violation Tickets resulting from the driver's conduct are borne entirely by the renter.
  • Insurance does not cover the loss or damage of any car parts like boot cover, wheel cover, number plate, car mirrors, antennas, upholstery, dashboard, seats, radio cd, key etc. 
  • Drivers and passengers are not allowed to smoke in the car for any reason.
  • Pets are not allowed in the car for any reason.
  • The customer is required to fasten the child seat at his own risk

The renter is obliged to inform the rental agent immediately if any accident takes place, otherwise the insurance is not valid! 

The renter must take the following measures:

  • Obtain as much as possible details of the persons involved in the accident.
  • Immediately provide the rental agent with all the details regarding the accident.
  • Immediately notify the authorities if the third party should be investigated or in the event of injured persons.
  • Do not leave the vehicle without taking correct measures to protect and safeguard it.


Unlimited mileage: Unlimited mileage is a type of mileage policy. It means that the renter is allowed to drive however many miles or kilometers around the great island of Crete without being charged extra for it. There are limitations concerning certain driving areas that apply to such deal such as driving on surfaces which are unpaved such as sand, dirt, gravel, riverbeds, mud, rocks or other natural terrain.

Theft protection (TP): Theft Protection covers the cost of the rental car that gets stolen and for repairs for the car if someone tries to steal it. Theft Protection will not cover items or personal belongings that are stolen from the car, such as GPS, computer, keys etc. When you pick up your rented vehicle you will sign a rental agreement with Intercars car rental. If you do not comply with the terms of the rental agreement, Theft Protection will be declared null and void. For example, if you leave the car unlocked and it is stolen, you will be responsible for the whole amount of replacing the car. Furthermore, at the event or attempt of theft, the renter is obliged to immediately inform the company otherwise the insurance is not valid.

Personal Accident Coverage (PAI): Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) provides permanent or partial disability benefits for bodily injury resulting from an accident. It may be the standard formula included in all our rental agreements which protects the main driver in the rental agreement, but without the PAI the driver would actually be exposed. Indemnities are agreed for any major injury occurring to the driver during the rental period.

Exceptions
Indemnities will not be issued in the following cases:

  • Self-inflicted intentional injury, suicide or attempted suicide;
  • Murder or attempted murder;
  • Accident occurred while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (unless prescribed and taken under the supervision of a physician);
  • Accident caused by illegal street-racing;
  • War or war-related events;
  • Engagement in illegal activities;
  • Complications related to pregnancy or childbirth;
  • Glasses replacement or ophthalmological examination, if the damage to the eyesight was not caused by a traffic collision.

The insurance will no longer be valid in case of embezzlement of the hired car by the renter, who has not returned the vehicle in time to the location scheduled, or otherwise breached the rental agreement.

Notice: This list represents a summary of the possible situations; other restrictions may apply.

Third part insurance coverage (TPI): Third Party Insurance provides compensation for bodily injuries to people when the rented vehicle is involved in an accident. This could include the driver of the other vehicle, pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists. All vehicles must be equipped with liability insurance in order to travel on the road which covers damage costs to anything outside of the car but not the actual car itself.

You're normally covered for:

  • Public Liability which covers injuries to persons outside the rental car.
  • Property Damage which covers damage to property other than the rental vehicle or renter, drivers' or passengers' property.

Fire insurance (FI): Fire Insurance covers the damage caused to the rental vehicle by fire, lightning strike or explosion.
 

Flat tire, underside and glass insurance (FUG) (GI): Flat tire, underside and glass protection are standard insurance coverages offered by Intercars car rental, that releases you from the excess cost that derives from damages done to the tires, underside, and glasses of the rental vehicle in case of an accident.

Please note: Destroyed tires, glasses or damages caused to the underside of the car which were done intentionally or as a result of reckless or negligent driving are not covered by any insurance policy. These include driving on unpaved surfaces, driving under the influence of illegal substances (drugs, alcohol, etc.)

Flat Tire in case of nail or small puddle: In case of normal speed driving, customers are obligated to inform our office if a flat tire situation occurs, via email or phone call and the company will immediately send the road assistance service. On the other hand, the driver can replace the flat tire with the spare wheel and by a low-speed drive take the vehicle at the nearest petrol station to fix the damaged tire. At the end of the rental period, show us the receipt and the cost of the damage will be fully refunded.

Damaged Tires in case of over speed, off road, bad or careless driving: In case that the tire is completely damaged (burst, non-repairable), the customer is obliged to call our office and let us be informed so that the causes of the tire damage are investigated. If the customer drives against highway code (overspeed, bad driving etc) or off road, he will then be charged with the full amount of the tire damage to be fixed.

Road assistance: Our cars are covered by a 24/7 roadside assistance, covering the whole island. An agent will always be available in case of malfunction.

Replacement of the car in crash of breakdown: Your damaged vehicle will be replaced with another one so that you can continue your vacation. In circumstances where we cannot replace the damaged vehicle, you are free to claim the cost of the remaining rental days. Replacement or refund will not take place if driving was on the grounds of negligence. Our company has the right to investigate the causes of the accident/breakdown and deny the replacement of the car if the use of it was against the terms & conditions. Our company is not obliged to replace the damaged car with the same type of car. If the customer does not accept the replacement, Intercars car rental is not obliged to return the remaining amount corresponding to the period of days remaining.

GPS navigation system: Find your way around when in Crete by including a GPS unit in your car rental for just a small extra fee of 5 euros. GPS systems are great for any trip because they can show you the quickest, most-direct routes -  saving you both time and gas money. Intercars car rental offers you the possibility to add the GPS device to your booking simply by selecting "GPS navigator" once you have chosen your vehicle and the price will be automatically updated. When booking with Intercars car rental make sure that you haven't selected a model that has a standard GPS unit and thus avoid the extra expense.

Taxes: Taxes VAT 24 %  and all local taxes are included in all our prices.
